The Vancouver Island university initially started as Malaspina College around 1969 but later was known as Malaspina University. Finally, on September 1, 2008, it came to be known as Vancouver Island University. The university has around 16,175 students.

Campus

The main campus of the university is known as Nanaimo. Other than Nanaimo, other campuses of the university are known as well Powell River and Cowichan. All the three campuses of the university have facilities such as libraries, computer labs, laboratories, and more. Nanaimo is the main campus, has a breath-taking ocean-view. The Power River campus will provide the students with a sense of mini-vibrant yet a connected community. Other than this, the university’s Cowichan campus is the latest campus where it offers several programs.

Vancouver Island University has an active involvement in research where students also play their role too. The university also has associated itself with several research institutes and centers like the Centre for Community Outreach and Care, Institute of Practical Philosophy, Media Research Lab, Centre for Shellfish, and more.

Student Life

The university offers various ranges of accommodation in Nanaimo. Most of the accommodations are close to classes. The students get to choose their convenient options from single private rooms that have semi-private bathrooms to shareable bedrooms in the residences. Though the kitchen facilities are available in the student residences, if the students want to buy meals, they can do so by purchasing in respective two cafeterias on the campus. Another accommodation for students to live in is a homestay where they will be provided three meals per day. In a homestay, the students get to live with a Canadian family.

Another option that the students can choose is off-campus housing. The students can search for rooms with shared housing options, apartments and room and board options in the off-campus option. The students can search and select off-campus housings in Nanaimo. The students can seek websites such as Craigslist and get themselves a place to live off-campus.
