The University of Birmingham is in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England (UK)and is known as the first English civic university that received its royal charter. There are around 35,445students in the university, where 22,940 students are undergraduates, and 12,505 are postgraduates. The university has a fascinating history when it comes to its establishment. 

In 1825, it was established as Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery, and later in 1836, it came to be known as Birmingham Royal School of Medicine and Surgery.  After a few years in 1843, it was known as Queen’s College but again, after some time, in 1875, it was established as Mason Science College. In 1898, it was then known as Mason University College, and finally, in 1900, it gained university status by royal charter.

Campuses

The University of Birmingham has some beautiful campuses. The main campus of the university is in the south-west of Birmingham city center, in Edgbaston. In contrast, the great hall of the university is situated in the domed Aston Webb Building. The university covers around 25-acre land.

The university has nine sight libraries as well. The libraries’ name is Barber Music Library, Barber Art Fine Library, Education Library, Barnes Library, Dental Library, the Shakespeare Institute Library, Orchard Learning Resource Centre, and Main Library. Among all the libraries, The Shakespeare Institute Library is considered the UK resource for studying Renaissance Literature.    

Research

The University of Birmingham is a proud member of the Russell Group of research universities and is home to several research centers.  Not just that, the university is also a founding member of Universities 21. The university has conducted much research related to various global issues. Some of their well-known research include Air Pollution, Liver Transplantation, Superdiversity, Quantum Technologies, and many more.

Student Life

The University of Birmingham offers safe accommodation too to its students. The accommodation is given on a first-come, first-served basis and is provided mostly to the first-year students. It provides accommodation in areas such as Vale Village, Selly Oak Village, and Pritchatts Park Village. In case of security, the university offers security to the student’s bike and their home guidance when the students are out. The security is offered by a total number of 48 licensed officers.
