The University of Canterbury is based in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. This university is the second oldest university in New Zealand. The university is a public type of university. It was established in 1873, and back then, it was known as Canterbury College. In 1961, the university finally became an independent university. There are 18,364 students in the university, where around 3,271 were postgraduates’ students and 11,621 were undergraduates’ students.

Campuses

The campus of the university covers around 190 acres of land, and it is the main campus. The main campus is located in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam.  On the very campus, there are learning facilities, accommodation, and any leisure activities. 

There are three major libraries in the university.  Besides books, the libraries hold well renowned published eBooks, newspapers, and journals. The university’s main library is in the tallest building on the campus, which is the 11-storey Puaka-James Hight building.  The Engineering and physical sciences library offer teaching and research in engineering, sciences, and forestry. The third library, Macmillan Brown Library, named after a Canterbury academic known as John MacMillan Brown, is more of a research kind of library where archives, an art gallery can be found.  

Research

Several types of research are conducted at the university. The university has many research Centres, including a biomathematics Research Centre, the Centre of atmospheric research, child well-being research institute, geohealth laboratory, natural hazards research Centre, and more. 

Programs and Academic Groups

The university offers a various undergraduate course, postgraduate course, honors degree, masters’ degree, PhDs, and doctoral degrees, and a certificate of proficiency. It covers most of the covers such as accounting, art theory, biochemistry, audiology, cinema studies, classics, civil engineering, and more.

The courses through which the university offers degrees are social work, sports coaching, arts, commerce, health sciences, science, and speech and language pathology. Besides this, health and education are taught in the Manawa building in Christchurch.   

Student Life  

The university has accommodation for all undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. There are options of accommodations in the form of homestay, private rental. Another fact is that the university offers temporary accommodation if the students are visiting C with their parents or are searching for permanent accommodation. 

A total of ten halls of residence in the university are used to offer accommodation to the students. The name of the ten halls of residence is Tupuanuku, Bishop Julius Hall, Kirkwood Avenue Hall, University Hall, Waimairi Village, Hayashi, College House, Rochester and Rutherford Hall, Ilam apartments, Sonoda Christchurch campus. Ilam apartments and university hall is the largest hall for accommodation in the entire university. UC accommodation handles six out of eleven of these halls.
