The Van Vliet Complex, named for Dr. Maury Van Vliet, the first dean of the college, houses the facilities of the North Campus. From 1945 until 1978, Dr. Van Vliet worked for the institution as an administrator, coach, and teacher.

The Physical Activity & Wellness Center, Universiade Pavilion, Hanson Fitness & Lifestyle Center, Wilson Climbing Center, Main Gym, Clare Drake Arena, dance studios, gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, lecture halls, meeting rooms, and classrooms are among the amenities available on North Campus.

Physical Activity & Wellness Centre

A student referendum in March 2010 endorsed the idea for the Physical Activity and Wellness Center.

The university’s gateway showpiece, the PAW Centre, is situated on a noticeable corner of the campus. To make room for additional program space, the existing buildings were renovated in addition to the new construction. An atrium-style walkway called Social Street connects the new and old buildings. Student amenities are integrated into this pedestrian artery, which will function as a main entry point to the campus.

The Graduate Students’ Association, the Faculty, the Students’ Union, and the University of Alberta collaborated to create the PAW Center, which aims to support and enhance the health and wellbeing of the campus community.

Universiade Pavilion (Butterdome)

A seven-lane, 200-meter track with a Mondo floor surface, long jump and pole-vaulting areas, an indoor soccer field, four basketball courts, four volleyball courts, four tennis courts, four badminton courts, a two-story bleacher seating area with a capacity of 5,500, locker rooms, and multipurpose spaces are all housed in the 64,000 square foot Universiade Pavilion. The Pavilion’s large floor area and tall ceiling make it suitable for a variety of events, from athletic events to craft fairs, ceremonies to career fairs.

The Pavilion is the ideal venue for big events because of its numerous entrances and enormous load that can accommodate a semi-truck inside.
