The area of the main campus of UTD is 445 acres. It contains a Visitor Centre, Bookstore, parking lots and some parts of the Founders Building. The first campus creation idea looked for the brutalist-style architecture of concrete, skywalks, and a monorail, far from the conventional red brick style. Many old buildings are off-white, pale, firm concrete with repeating structures. To offer safety from cold weather and high temperatures, many buildings are joined by a series of raised indoor walking ways, also known as sky bridges.
